A parental visit

Hello! It’s Sarah again. We had a huge weekend that spilled over into the week — and apparently took a few days to recover since I’m finally posting on Thursday.

First up was Life Light, which is a huge free Christian music festival that happens every year in Sioux Falls. It took place in a big field by a water park about 4 miles west of town. For those of you who have been to Sonshine in Detroit Lakes, MN, this was very similar. But free! The festival ran Friday afternoon through Sunday night, with the big headliners at the end of each day.Michael and I went Friday and Saturday night to take in both the music and the chaos.Michael’s new company, Vision Video Inc., created a bunch of sweet sweet videos for the event (including the promo video on the Life Light website), so we had heard quite a bit about it and were really excited to see how it all came together.Anyway.Here are some photos. If you click on them they’ll expand so you can see them better.

Here’s what 50,000 people between you and the main stage looks like.

After Michael took this he titled this one, "My limited view of Michael W. Smith."

I didn’t mind the crowd. In fact I kind of thrive on the excitement and sense of shared community these types of events create.

Moving on.

My parents decided to make the 4 hour drive from the Twin Cities to visit us over the weekend.Hooray! However they couldn’t get a hotel room for the first few nights of the weekend because 50,000 of our new friends were in town for Life Light. They ended up coming Saturday through Tuesday, which was perfect. It was great to show them the house, explore some new restaurants and take a tour down my mom’s childhood memory lane.My mom’s family is from Sioux Falls, although we don’t have any close relatives here anymore. It was really cool to see the houses she grew up in, her schools, the places her family used to go out for breakfast, the house where my great-grandpa Ed was born in 1899, and in true Grimsby family fashion, to hang out the windows of the car and have a long conversation with the new owner of my great-grandparent’s house.

A visit to Michael’s new place of work, and the reason we moved out here in the first place. Here we are posing in the film studio with my dad and watching my mom golf in the lobby. She did really well!

A visit to my great-grandparents in the cemetery. We used to drive out to Sioux Falls quite a bit when I was growing up to visit them.I’m really lucky to have known them so well since they both lived until I was in high school.Great-Grandpa Ed was just 6 months short of hitting is 100th birthday!

A view out the window of my dad making friends yet again with neighbors. He’s been here twice and met more of our neighbors than we have in our almost-three weeks of living here!

Unpacking the last few boxes. We left the fragile stuff for the end which coincidentally is what my parents helped us pack up before we left.We have a couple cardboard boxes left here and there, but the main stuff is now out.Next things on our house to-do list are to find a bed for the guest bedroom and hang photos.

Our dog Riley and my parents’ dog Winston finally find peace.

Since they left on Tuesday I’ve been diving back into the job search.Yesterday I went to a South Dakota Communicators Network meeting and learned a lot about the South Dakota agriculture business.I also had an interview of sorts plus a really interesting personality inventory test with our new State Farm insurance agent. She recently had a position open up in her office so I figured I might as well check it out. There was a math section on the timed test but after a brief moment of panic I realized it wasn’t so bad and I think I answered them all correctly. The idea of the test is to find out if you’re more sales or service minded.I won’t know until I hear from the insurance agent gal again though, since I waited in her office lobby for half an hour after the test and then was eventually sent home because she was too busy.Hmm.

I’m getting all suited up again to meet for another interview in a few minutes — thistime with an enthusiastic and seemingly scatterbrained veterinarian who is actually flying his own plane in from Mitchell (the place of the infamous corn palace) to meet with me.He’s working on his pilot’s license and has a position open for an office manager at a clinic in Sioux Falls. We’re going to meet in the lounge of a small private airport in town.He had also mentioned he may need to bum a ride off me to the animal hospital since he won’t have a car.I think I’ve avoided that situation though by suggesting the airport lounge.Totally different than what I’m used to, but like I’ve said, I’m keeping my options open.I really don’t know what to expect but it’s been an interesting process so far.
